Blog Orlando Wrap Up

Ok, it has taken me almost a week to write this but wanted to do it!   Blog Orlando was last weekend, and I got the chance to attend the opening reception held at Slingapours on Friday, September 26th as well as the full day on Sat, the 27th over at Rollins College.

Friday night at the opening reception I finally had the pleasure of meeting Alex Hillman of Indy Hall. Right away we chatted about coworking, and the new formation of a coworking space here with CoLab Orlando.  He had nothing but great feedback to share on ways the community can help with the growth of CoLab.  He also had a session on Saturday titled, “Keeping the Passion,” about keeping that initiative and drive in the community.    I only wish I would have had more of a chance to speak with him, but will be in contact with him to learn more.

So aside from Alex Hillman’s session,  the opening session started with Jake McKee, speaking about the success with the Lego Factory, and there were several quotes he said that hit home to what we are doing at NFi Studios.  They were:

We like this marketplace better…in fact we are creating it.

Small groups can mean big power.

Other sessions included: A dynamic speaker, Spike Jones speaking about “Word of Mouth Marketing & Social Media”, “Twitter in Journalism” by Orlando Sentinel writer Etan Horowitz, and “The Orlando Scene” with Alex Rudloff and Gregg Pollack.

On top of many others, what was rewarding to me, was the networking experience.  As only being in the technology industry for about 2 years, I am continuing to learn each day from my peers.  I met many people from all different industries coming together to grow in their fields and lives.  I found that Blog Orlando was a successful event, and I look forward to more events like this in the future, including next year’s Blog Orlando.

Cruise Technology: Be connected everywhere!

Recently I just came back from a cruise in the Western Caribbean, on a Royal Caribbean ship and had a great time. Some of the islands we stopped at were Labadee, Montego Bay in Jamaica, and Cozumel, Mexico. I truly had a great time, and did not look at my phone once after we took off, well maybe a couple times to turn it on real quick to get texts at least…and I also left a bunch of tweets before we took off :)

I figured and knew that being on a cruise ship you can’t use your phone, or be connected to the Internet but boy was I wrong. When you walk on the ship, they let you know how to stay connected, yeah you will pay a heck of alot, but the ships are capable of having easy mobile and internet access. Read the rest

How do you track the weather?

As I am approaching going on a cruise soon, I have been checking the weather, and the storm tracking every day now.  I find it so easy to find out whereever I am at what is going on with the storms.    First, I look at Twitter… I am following Hurricane Alerts and each day there are updates and a link to a map that shows the progress of the storms, and where they will be each day.

Also, not only Hurricane Alerts, but plenty of tweets are going across the country… Tweets from the Red Cross and twitter tracking for Gustav. Read the rest

This Day in History

This Day in History…

1) Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast three years ago as a Category 4 hurricane. Despite being only the third most powerful storm of the 2005 hurricane season, Katrina was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. The hurricane caused damage to the New Orleans area, as well as the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama. Aid from around the world poured in to help the residents of these areas who not only lost their jobs, but homes, food, and water. Today the memory keeps living on and people are still rebuilding their lives.

President Bush declared September 16 a national day of remembrance for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

2) The Beatles played their last major live concert at Candlestick Park, California. The band continues to record together until their breakup in 1970.

3) Michael Jackson turns 50!
